A battery keeps your fridge, well pump and furnace running when the grid goes down, and your panels recharge it during the day. O&R’s Bring Your Own Battery program pays $50 per kW each summer when Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge or FranklinWH batteries share power on peak days.
NYSERDA also takes $200 per kWh off the price upfront ($450 in disadvantaged communities). Prefer a generator, or both? We install those too.
Yes. With solar, Orange & Rockland still sends a monthly bill, but it’s usually much smaller.
Extra power your panels send to the grid earns credits that carry forward month to month. You still pay the customer charge and the Customer Benefit Contribution (CBC), which is $1.00 per kW per month in 2026, or about $8 a month for an 8 kW system. Kasselman Solar shows your expected remaining O&R bill in your proposal.
You earn bill credits, and how leftovers are handled depends on when your system was connected. For O&R systems connected before March 9, 2017, leftover credits are cashed out once a year at wholesale rates. Systems connected from 2017 through 2021 carry credits forward month to month for 20 years. New systems connected since 2022 also carry credits forward and pay the monthly CBC.
O&R’s Bring Your Own Battery program pays $50 per kW per year for battery power shared during summer peak events, May 1 through September 30. There are up to 15 events a season, each 3 to 4 hours. Eligible brands include Tesla, Enphase, SolarEdge and FranklinWH. These payments are separate from NYSERDA’s upfront incentive of $200 per kWh ($450 in disadvantaged communities).
Often, yes. FranklinWH can charge from a supported generator, while Tesla Powerwall runs alongside a generator without charging from it. Send Kasselman Solar your generator model and transfer switch details and we’ll let you know how we can design around it. We also install new home generators, alone or paired with a battery.
Usually, yes, even if another company installed your panels. Kasselman Solar checks your inverter and electrical panel first. Adding a battery goes through O&R review, which we handle.
Kasselman Solar installs for O&R homeowners in Orange and Sullivan counties, New York. We don’t currently install in Rockland County. This page covers O&R’s New York customers only; Rockland Electric customers in New Jersey have different rates and rules.
No. A typical O&R bill in New York (600 kWh a month) rose from $126 in 2021 to $157 in 2025. The current plan added $4.93 a month in 2026 and adds another $5.33 in January 2027 (New York PSC example). Your solar quote is based on your current bills, so any future increase only adds to what solar saves.
