NYSERDA (the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) runs the NY-Sun program and maintains a statewide contractor directory for residential and small commercial solar. Within that program, NYSERDA tracks installation quality through real inspection scoring and annual performance standards – and then recognizes contractors who consistently meet those standards year after year.
That’s what makes this milestone so impactful: Platinum isn’t a one-time recognition. It means we have earned NYSERDA’s Quality Solar Installer designation for six consecutive years – proving long-term quality across real projects. Out of the 200+ solar contractors on NYSERDA’s list this year, only four have reached Platinum status (1). How Does NYSERDA Measure Quality?
To earn a NYSERDA Quality Solar Installer (QSI) designation, a contractor must:
- Be an active, full status solar builder in the NY-Sun Program
- Complete at least 12 projects through NY-Sun within the past calendar year
- Have an average field inspection score of 4.0 (out of 5, no rounding up), within the past calendar year, on NYSERDA-performed inspections (1)
Beyond the base Quality Solar Installer (QSI) designation, NYSERDA also identifies contractors who have exceeded these expectations for an extended period of time. This brings us to the Gold and Platinum level designations:
- NYSERDA Gold QSI: identifies an installer who has earned NYSERDA’s Quality Solar Installer designation for 3 consecutive years.
- NYSERDA Platinum QSI: identifies an installer who has earned NYSERDA’s Quality Solar Installer designation for 6 consecutive years.
